Oak & Iron

The Objective

The owners of a beautiful Preston Hollow home engaged Platinum Gym Design to transform a second-floor bonus room into a fully equipped private gym. The space — with its vaulted tongue-and-groove wood ceiling, slatted wood feature wall, and signature arched window — had strong architectural character from the outset. The brief was to design an equipment program that maximized the room's functional potential while preserving its warm, residential feel.

The Solution

The design works in harmony with the room's existing architecture rather than against it. The natural slatted wood wall and vaulted ceiling with its beadboard finish set a warm, organic tone, complemented by sage green walls that give the space a calm, spa-like quality. A ceiling fan keeps the room comfortable during training sessions.

The equipment selection is intelligently curated for a private residence: a Peloton Cross Training Tread anchors the cardio zone in front of the arched window, flooding the space with natural light during use. Alongside it, a Peloton Cross Training Bike provides a low-impact cardiovascular option. A wall-mounted flat-screen display is positioned for easy viewing from both cardio stations.

The strength and conditioning zone is compact but complete. A set of NUOBELL 550 adjustable dumbbells on their stand replaces an entire rack of fixed weights in a fraction of the footprint. A Rogue kettlebell set on an Apollo Athletics rack sits alongside a TRX PRO4 suspension trainer mounted to the wall, providing functional training versatility without the footprint of larger machines. A wall-mounted shelf holds a graduated set of soft-toss medicine balls, keeping accessories off the floor and neatly organized.

A Force USA Pro Series adjustable bench serves both the dumbbell station and the broader open floor area, which features a yoga mat for stretching and floor-based work. The flooring is 2' x 2' performance rubber tile in Mocha Latte, chosen to read as warm and residential rather than industrial while still protecting the floor beneath. Every element has been selected to create a gym that feels like a natural part of the home, ready for use from the day of completion in May 2026.
