Three years ago, a client who asked us to include a cold plunge in their home gym design would have been in the minority. Today, recovery and wellness integration is one of the most common briefs we receive — and one of the most important trends reshaping luxury fitness design.
The mainstreaming of recovery-focused training is driven, in part, by a growing body of scientific research demonstrating the performance benefits of structured recovery protocols. Cold water immersion, infrared sauna therapy, compression, and breathwork have all moved from the fringes of elite sport into the mainstream wellness conversation — and affluent consumers are investing accordingly.
Infrared saunas have become one of the most requested features in luxury residential gym projects. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air to very high temperatures, infrared saunas use radiant heat to warm the body directly — allowing longer, more comfortable sessions at lower ambient temperatures. The health claims are significant, though still subject to ongoing research. What is not in doubt is the experiential quality: a well-designed infrared sauna is a genuinely luxurious amenity that transforms the post-workout experience.
Cold water immersion — the cold plunge — has perhaps been the fastest-growing trend in luxury wellness design over the past three years. Popularised by a new generation of wellness-focused athletes, podcasters, and biohackers, the cold plunge is now a standard request in our most ambitious residential projects. Purpose-built cold plunge pools, with precise temperature control and filtration systems, range from compact stainless steel tubs to full-scale architectural water features.
Beyond specific recovery technologies, we are seeing a significant shift towards biophilic design principles in luxury fitness spaces — the intentional integration of natural elements, light, materials, and views into the gym environment. The evidence base for biophilic design's positive effect on stress, wellbeing, and cognitive performance is strong, and the aesthetic results can be extraordinary.
If you are planning a new gym or renovation, we strongly recommend thinking beyond the workout from the outset. Recovery integration is best designed in from the beginning — not retrofitted. Even a modest recovery zone, intelligently planned, can transform the quality of your fitness environment and the returns you get from your training investment. Our design team can walk you through the full range of recovery options and help you identify the combination that makes most sense for your space, your budget, and your wellness goals.
