One of the most common mistakes made in gym design projects is treating equipment procurement as a retail exercise — browsing websites, reading reviews, and making purchasing decisions based on price and availability. Professional equipment procurement is a fundamentally different discipline, and the difference in outcome is substantial.

The Trade Pricing Advantage

Premium equipment manufacturers operate a clear distinction between retail and trade channels. Trade pricing — available only to accredited designers and installers — typically represents a 20-35% reduction on retail price for commercial-grade equipment. For a significant gym project, this difference can easily exceed the cost of the design fee itself. At Platinum Gym Design, our direct relationships with every major premium manufacturer allow us to access trade pricing on behalf of our clients for both residential and commercial projects.

Lead Times and Supply Chain

Premium equipment — particularly commercial-grade pieces from European manufacturers — often involves lead times of 8-16 weeks. Managing these lead times within a construction program requires experience and planning. A piece of equipment that arrives two weeks after installation is complete disrupts the handover process and adds unnecessary cost. Our procurement service manages all lead times as part of the overall project program.

Brand Knowledge

The premium equipment market is substantially more complex than it appears from the outside. Within each category — cardio, strength, functional, recovery — there are meaningful differences in quality, warranty terms, service support, and aesthetic positioning between brands. Technogym, Life Fitness, Matrix, Precor, Rogue, Eleiko, and a range of specialist European manufacturers all occupy distinct positions in the market. Selecting the right brand for each piece of equipment, in the context of your specific project, requires deep familiarity with the full range.

Quality Benchmarks

Not all equipment that looks premium is premium. The most reliable indicators of genuine quality are: the weight and feel of the construction, the quality of the upholstery and padding, the smoothness of the mechanical motion, the warranty terms offered (and the reputation of the manufacturer for honoring them), and the availability and cost of spare parts and service. Our team has tested and specified thousands of pieces of equipment across hundreds of projects — and we know which brands consistently deliver and which disappoint.

Working With a Designer

The most efficient and cost-effective approach to gym equipment procurement is to engage a specialist designer early in the process — before any purchasing decisions are made. A good designer will save you money through trade pricing, save you time through managed procurement, and save you from expensive mistakes through informed specification. The fee investment is routinely recovered in full through procurement savings alone.
